Family

“But he replied to the man who told him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers!” - Matthew 12:48-49

Family and loyalty seem to be two words that always go together. As some have said, blood is thicker than water. Families tend to share theological and ideological beliefs along with traditions, idiosyncrasies, and values. Families can be huge blessings.

Sadly, however, sometimes this is not always a good thing. Our family loyalties and ties can threaten to pull us away from God and cause us to overlook sin. Jesus in this passage, as well as other passages, speaks to these pitfalls. Jesus aligns his loyalties, values, and ties to those who do the will of God. In another passage he says that we need to be always willing to chose God and his will over family. Inside the Church we can find our true brothers, sisters, mothers, and fathers, and what an even better blessing that is.

As a family in the church we find other who share in our traditions, values, and theology. We find a support system, comfort, encouragement, love, compassion, concern, and belonging. Let’s be a part of Christ’s family and share in the true blessings.
